    Lake Tahoe is located along the western edge of Nevada, just south of where Interstate 80 passes between Reno, Nevada, and Truckee, California. The Sierra Nevada and Carson Range mountains border Lake Tahoe.

    Lake Tahoe is 87 miles from Sacramento, California, 49 miles from Reno and 500 miles from Las Vegas. Carson City, the capital of Nevada, is 16 miles from Lake Tahoe and is the nearest large city.

    North Lake Tahoe is accessible from Interstate 80 via Truckee, California. South Lake Tahoe is accessible via Routes 50 and 89.

    Lake Tahoe has a surface area of 191 square miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It covers two counties in California and three in Nevada: Douglas County, Washoe County and Carson City.
