Instructions

Stress Reduction

  • Step 1:
Deep breathing reduces stress. During times of stress, the natural tendency is to take quick, short breaths. This can result in increased blood pressure. Consciously taking deep breaths during stressful times counteracts this natural tendency

Reduces Insomnia

  • Step 1:
Deep breathing aids relaxation. It can also slow down racing thoughts and help a person relax enough to fall asleep.

Reduces Pain

  • Step 1:
Deep breathing releases endorphins, natural pain killers, into the bloodstream. In addition to helping general aches and pains, deep breathing helps muscles relax which results in reduced neck, back, and stomach pain.

How to Breathe Deeply

  • Step 1:
When breathing deeply, expand the stomach instead of the chest. In order to know if you are breathing correctly, lie down and put one hand on your stomach and the other on your chest. If your stomach rises when you inhale, you are breathing deeply.

Make It a Habit

  • Step 1:
Breathing deeply can be done throughout the day, when driving, standing in line, or sitting at a desk. This habit reduces stress and improves overall health when done regularly.
