VA Benefits of Survivors
Saturday, May 23, 2009
InstructionsDependent and Indemnity CompensationStep 1: One benefit the VA offers survivors is the Dependent and Indemnity Compensation (DIC). Applicable to the spouse, dependent children and dependent parents, the DIC is a monthly tax-free benefit beginning at $1,186 paid to the spouse and increased for each dependent child. There is also a transitional benefit in the amount of $286 per month in addition to the monthly DIC for households with one or more children under age 18 years. This transitional benefit is included for 2 years. Eligible survivors must complete and submit VA-Form 21-534 to receive DIC benefits.
Death PensionStep 1: If a deceased veteran was discharged from service honorably and served at least 90 days of active duty with at least one of those days during wartime, his surviving spouse and children may be eligible for a death pension. This particular VA benefit is based on the income of the surviving spouse or child. The income levels must not exceed set limits, which are outlined based on specific circumstances. The amount of death pension each survivor receives is calculated based on the difference between her countable income and the set income limits. In order to apply, survivors must complete and submit VA Form 21-534.
Burial AllowancesStep 1: Another VA survivor benefit is the burial or internment allowance. If the deceased service member's death was service related after September 11, 2001, the VA may pay $2,000 toward the funeral, burial and internment expenses. Burial and internment expenses after December 1, 2001, for nonservice-related deaths may be reimbursed up to $600. In order to be considered for reimbursement, eligible survivors must complete and submit VA Form 21-530.
Educational AssistanceStep 1: The Survivors and Dependent's Educational Assistance pays up to 45 months of benefits to the spouse or children of a deceased veteran who died from a service-related disability. The DEA helps with training or education-related expenses. Eligible survivors must complete and submit VA Form 22-5490.
Home LoansStep 1: Surviving spouses of service members who died in service or whose death was the result of a service-related injury may be eligible for a guaranteed home loan. The loan may be used to purchase, improve or build a home or to refinance an existing mortgage. VA loans are offered by private lenders. To apply for a VA home loan, eligible survivors must complete and submit VA Form 26-1817.
