Instructions

Introduction

  • Step 1:
Troubleshooting Internet search engines is a difficult endeavor. There is a lot to understand about how search engines work, and a lot to consider concerning how they rank and accept websites. While there may be any number of problems and reasons why a website is not showing up well on an Internet search engine, there are a number of considerations and resulting fixes that can be made to troubleshoot these engines and raise the awareness of a website.

Post Titles

  • Step 1:
Website owners should make sure to have page titles on every page of a website to avoid search engine listing problems or lack of optimization. This is a quick and easy fix that can make a large difference. Provocative post titles should be used on a website, but first and foremost each post title should make use of the greatest amount of important keywords as possible. Also, a variety of headers (H1, H2 headers, etc.) are often found throughout each highly ranked page's content. These are noticed specifically by Internet search engines.

Links

  • Step 1:
Good websites troubleshoot the waters of Internet search engines by ensuring there are no broken links within a sitemap. Broken links will break down the crawlability of a website by a search engine. Webmasters consider the fact that too many outgoing links on a page will cause a search engine to label a site as spam. More than 100 outgoing links could cause this problem, and a website will be marked as spam by the search engine.

Internet search engines make a lot of decisions based on incoming links. One of the key problems with making sure a search engine works for a website is that the site does not have enough quality incoming links. Sites that are link farms and link to hundreds of sites are not considered quality, so this may be a misconception for some. The best way to garner such links is to write original content that other sites would be interested in linking to. Some such quality content would be breaking news reports, exclusive interviews, or original how-to guides. All three of these kinds of content often produce the most link backs and thus optimize a site for a search engine.

Submission

  • Step 1:
Submission of a site to the Open Directory Project will avoid issues with getting ranked highly on Internet search engine results. If a website is accepted by the Project, the worth, Google PageRank and more of the site should go up within various Internet search engines.

Images

  • Step 1:
Websites play nice with Internet search engines when they use alternate text for all images. Typing in the "alt=put your own alternate text here" field into the image's HTML tag will create this alternate text (this text appears when the user rolls their mouse over an image). Use of alternate text will serve to optimize the website for the search engine.
