Instructions

Preventing Pregnancy

  • Step 1:
If you were taking birth control pills to keep from becoming pregnant you can obviously stop. Since you are already pregnant, your body will stop ovulating, which means you can't conceive another child while you are already pregnant. Taking the medication will therefore serve no more purpose than a daily piece of candy, and is a waste of the cost of the prescription in addition to being an unnecessary medication.

Potential Harm to an Unborn Child

  • Step 1:
Some women worry about the effect on the unborn child if they continued taking birth control pills before they realized they were pregnant. There's little reason for alarm, according to a Mayo Clinic website: "Despite years of this accident happening, there's very little evidence that exposure to the hormones in birth control pills causes birth defects." However, the site advises that because of the large dosage of estrogen in the pills, it would be best for the baby to discontinue taking birth control pills once you know you are pregnant.

Hormones for Health

  • Step 1:
Some women take birth control pills for reasons other than preventing pregnancy, such as reducing acne. Women in this situation should consult their doctors to determine what their options are for safe treatment of these health issues during pregnancy.
