InstructionsLess is MoreStep 1: Do not clutter a small patio space unnecessarily. Choose the items for the patio carefully and try to keep it minimal. Provide storage on the patio to keep the patio space organized and smaller items out of sight when not in use. If there are household items that you typically store on the patio in the off-season, find another storage place for these items during the months you are using the patio as living space. Choose furniture that fits the space. Big and bulky chairs will take up more room than sleekly designed chairs. Instead of one large table, opt for one or two side tables instead.
Choose a ThemeStep 1: Decide on a theme for the patio and create the décor style around the theme. Go for a country look that incorporates wicker, gingham, wildflowers and antiques. Select a few attractive wicker chairs and a small wicker end table to create a seating area. Place weather-resistant gingham cushions on the wicker chairs. Find antique flowerpots and containers for some potted plants. You could even turn one sunny corner into a container garden and grow some cherry tomatoes or herbs in pots. Make a small patio into a beautiful garden by making plants the focal point of the décor. Hang plants from the ceiling in hanging planters, plant climbing vines in containers and encourage them to grow up a small wooden fence section leaning against a wall. Consider adding a small electric fountain in a corner to add soft water sounds to the patio.
Lights and ColorStep 1: Use lights and color to create the illusion of space. Add up-lights to dark corners to brighten them. String holiday lights along the ceiling to bring attention up and out from the patio. Attach wall sconces to the walls of the patio to provide space-saving light and add to the décor. Choose lighter colors rather than darker colors to make a small patio seem larger. When choosing cushions and pillows for furniture, select smaller, more neutral patterned fabric rather than large patterns and dark fabrics. Place a neutral-colored mat or rug on the floor of the patio to add comfort and lighten up the patio.
