Instructions

Pain & Bleeding

  • Step 1:
Some immediate prostate surgery side effects include bleeding and pain. These side effects usually disappear after a few weeks or months. If pain and bleeding do not go away, contact a physician.

Urinary Dysfunction

  • Step 1:
The Prostate Cancer Foundation states that a common side effect of prostate surgery is urinary dysfunction, ranging from incontinence or pain during urination. This occurs because of the close proximity of the bladder to the prostate glands.

Bowel Dysfunction

  • Step 1:
Bowel dysfunction is a side effect of prostate surgery, such as rectal bleeding, diarrhea and frequent stool. This side effect is rare, but happens because of damage to the rectum.

Erectile Dysfunction

  • Step 1:
The Prostate Cancer Foundation says that men experience erectile dysfunction after prostate surgery because of the removal of nerves near the prostate. Erectile dysfunction can be temporary or can be treated by a physician.

Infertility

  • Step 1:
Infertility occurs in men who have had prostate surgery, because seminal vesicles are removed with the prostate during a prostatectomy.
