    If used correctly, less than one woman out of a hundred will get pregnant each year while using Depo Provera. If taken incorrectly, about three out of 100 Depo Provera users will get pregnant each year.

How Pregnancy May Occur

  • Step 1:
    Depo Provera will immediately provide you with pregnancy protection if you get it within seven days after starting your period, within five days of having a miscarriage or an abortion, or within three weeks of giving birth. Pregnancy is most likely to occur if you are late getting your shot. Like all birth control methods, though, Depo Provera occasionally fails at preventing pregnancy, even when used correctly. The failure rate for Depo Provera, however, is one of the lowest of all birth control methods.

Knowing If You're Pregnant

  • Step 1:
    It may be difficult to know if you've become pregnant while using Depo Provera, because about half of women stop having a period after a year of getting the shot. If you get your shot every three months, your chance of pregnancy is very low, but you may still want to take a pregnancy test if you experience any other symptoms of pregnancy. Your doctor may ask you to take a pregnancy test if you get your shot more than two weeks late.

If Pregnancy Does Occur

  • Step 1:
    If you do become pregnant while using Depo Provera, getting the shot will not harm the fetus or terminate the pregnancy. Pregnancies that occur while using Depo Provera, however, are more likely to be ectopic pregnancies, meaning that the fertilized egg has implanted itself somewhere other than the uterus. If not treated promptly, an ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening.

Pregnancy after Depo Provera

  • Step 1:
    Depo Provera is probably not the best birth control option if you're planning on getting pregnant soon. Since the shot is meant to be long lasting, it often takes women nine months to a year to get pregnant after they stop getting the shot. Once its contraceptive effects wear off, however, Depo Provera will not have any long-term effect on a woman's fertility.
