Instructions

Time Frame

  • Step 1:
    A single shot of Depo Provera provides three months of contraceptive protection. Because of long-term effects, Depo Provera should not be used for longer than two years at a time.

Amenorrhea

  • Step 1:
    Irregular menstruation is common while taking Depo Provera; some women do not receive a period at all. Amenorrhea is most common if Depo Provera is used for longer than one year.

Bone Density

  • Step 1:
    Depo Provera may cause significant loss of bone density, increasing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis. Bone density loss associated with Depo Provera is usually irreversible.

Future Fertility

  • Step 1:
    After stopping use of Depo Provera, it may take up to a year for fertility to return; for some women, fertility may return quickly, but most experience at least some delay.

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

  • Step 1:
    There is much speculation, but little scientific proof, that there may be a connection between Depo Provera use and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a condition which causes ovarian cysts, high blood pressure and infertility.
