• Step 1:
  Wet mopping is never recommended for a hardwood floor. Standing water will dull the wood finish. Water that seeps into the seams and cracks will damage the wood, causing curling and cupping.

Care of Finished Hardwood

• Step 1:
  Unfinished hardwood is installed, sanded and then finished in the home. "Finished in place" hardwood is stained and sealed with multiple coats of urethane finish. Clean "finished in place" hardwood with water based cleaners. Use a very dry "damp" mop to apply cleaners.

Care of Pre-Finished Hardwood

  Hardwood flooring that is ready to install is called "pre-finished," and has been sanded, stained and sealed by the manufacturer. A number of different seals are available. Clean with a very dry damp mop and the cleaning product recommended by the manufacturer.

Hardwood Dos

  Sweep regularly to remove dirt and particles that can damage a hardwood surface. Vacuum to lift dirt from seams and cracks. Grease or sticky spots can be cleaned with a slightly dampened sponge. Hardwood floor cleaner can be used on scuffs and stains. Throw rugs on heavy traffic areas will help protect hardwood floors. A rug in front of the kitchen sink will help prevent water contact with a hardwood floor.

• Step 1:
  Never wet mop a hardwood floor or pour water on a hardwood floor. Water causes wood to expand, warp and curl. Avoid ammonia cleaners and oil soaps; they dull hardwood floor finishes. Do not wax hardwood floors.
