Instructions

  • Step 1:
Hold your partner close to you. The steps in a waltz are small and designed to allow the dancers to be close to each other. Hold your partner's right hand in your left and wrap your right arm around her waist.
  • Step 2:
Step forward with your left foot on the first count.
  • Step 3:
Move your right foot so it's beside your left, but not on the floor, on the second count. Step out to the right side of your left foot, then bring your feet together with your weight on the left foot on the third count. This makes the shape of half of the box of the traditional box step.
  • Step 4:
Step back with your right foot on the fourth count.
  • Step 5:
Bring your left foot beside your right foot on the fifth count. Step to the left and bring your feet together with your weight on the left foot on the sixth count.
  • Step 6:
Count each movement in your mind. One, step forward. Two, bring one foot to meet the next. Three, step to the side and feet together. Four, step back. Five, bring one foot to meet the next. Six, feet together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Count the waltz timing by one-two-three if that's easier than counting out six steps to complete the full box.
  • Learn waltz timing by counting out the rhythm while listening to music but not dancing to help train your ear.
  • Practice dancing the waltz in front of a mirror and count the steps out loud. Once you find that easier to do, add the music and continue to practice.
