How to Unlock an Xbox Hard Drive

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Windows-based computer
  • IDE internal hard drive cable
  • Television
  • Step 1:
    Take off the the power cord and any audio or video cables from the connectors that are on the Xbox.

    Take the Xbox console and press the release tab that is on the front of the hard drive compartment. Pull the hard drive out from the compartment.
  • Step 2:
    Take the Xbox console and place it next to the computer. Plug in the power cord to the Xbox console. Plug in a video connector to the Xbox console and plug the other end into a television set.

    Take the Xbox hard drive and attach a power connector from the computer's drive bay to the power connector of the Xbox hard drive. Connect the IDE cable from the Xbox to the Xbox hard drive.
  • Step 3:
    Turn on the computer and press the "Pause" key before it autotypes the drives.

    Turn on the TV. Turn on the Xbox console and wait as the Xbox transmits the password to the hard drive, unlocking it.
  • Step 4:
    Carefully pull out the IDE cable from the Xbox hard drive when the Xbox's Dashboard appears on the television.

    Turn off the Xbox and television.
  • Step 5:
    Plug the computer's IDE cable into the connector on the Xbox hard drive. Press any key on the computer so that it continues to boot up.
  • Step 6:
    Format the Xbox hard drive to use on the computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take the Xbox over to a clean and well lit area where you can pull out the hard drive in a single motion.Wipe off the hard drive after taking it out very carefully.
  • Static electricity can damage the hard drive, so be sure not to walk on any carpets or use the hard drive on a carpeted area.
