How to Tie Down a Motorcycle in a Pickup

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Motorcycle truck ramp or sturdy 8-by-1-foot board
  • 2 motorcycle tie-downs

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Clean out the bed of your truck. Make plenty of room so the motorcycle will fit comfortably and not scrub on other objects. Also, make sure that there is plenty of room in the front corners for the tie-downs to connect with your bed hooks.
  • Step 2:
Place your motorcycle ramp or long board up against the tailgate of your truck. If you are using a board, it may be wise to have another person help hold it on while you pull the bike up.
  • Step 3:
Carefully drive the bike up into the bed of the truck. Pull it completely up to the rear of the cab. Shift the bike into neutral.
  • Step 4:
Hook the non-adjustable ends of the tie-downs to the bed hooks in your truck. Make sure that the open end of the hooks are facing the motorcycle. This will prevent the tie-downs from slipping off the bed hooks.
  • Step 5:
Hook the other ends of the tie-downs to the handlebars on the motorcycle. Make sure that the tie downs are not twisted in any way. Pull on the tightening tabs of the tie-downs to cinch down the motorcycle until the suspension is quite compressed. Get both sides of the motorcycle as even as possible. Shake the motorcycle to make sure that it is completely secure.
  • Step 6:
Put up the tailgate of your truck, if possible. If not, make sure anything in the truck is secured and will not slide out the back.

Tips & Warnings

  • Have the tie-downs in a range that is easy to grab before you pull the motorcycle into the truck.
  • Be careful that your ramp doesn't fall down while you attempt to pull the bike onto the truck.
