Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer
  • Graphic design software
  • Office supplies such as business cards
  • Step 1:
Learn graphic design. Check with your local community college or university for graphic design programs or classes. Many schools offer classes in individual software packages, short programs of study or degree programs. Many institutions offer online classes or tutorial packages that can be downloaded for use to fit your schedule.
If going back to school isn't an option, check the websites of major software companies, such as Adobe, for possible tutorials or educational material to aid in a self-guided course of study.
  • Step 2:
Secure start-up capital. In order to start any new business, some amount of start-up capital is necessary. The amount of money required will depend on your goals and expectations. For a graphic design company, the bulk of start-up expenses will be spent on computers, printers, scanners and software. Most professional graphic design programs require a computer with fast processors and lots of RAM. If you already have a computer, check your software specifications for the required minimum setup and investigate how much it will cost to upgrade your existing computer. If necessary, you may need to purchase a new computer. Software costs will vary, depending on the type of package you choose.
In addition to hardware and software, capital to fund other items such as office furniture, supplies, advertising and samples will need to be calculated. The amount of money necessary will depend on your goals and expectations.
  • Step 3:
Purchase hardware and software. Based on your goals and budget, purchase or upgrade your computer hardware and software. When possible, invest in professional-grade equipment as it is designed for longer life and will offer better results. When purchasing software packages, be sure to investigate licensing options and limitations. Some packages are sold as a single-user license and may require the purchase of additional licenses to be used in an office environment. In addition to design software, don't forget about anti-virus software and programs to back up your data.
  • Step 4:
Advertise services. Utilizing your new hardware and software, design business cards, brochures, flyers and advertisements to market your new business. If you have previous graphic design samples, put together a book to show prospective customers. If not, design samples of various projects to use until you have real examples of your work.
