Instructions

  • Step 1:
    Look online at the websites of major rental car companies. You'll find discounts and cheaper rates online (see Resources below).
  • Step 2:
    Get a credit card. If you have horrible credit and can't get a credit card from a traditional bank, GreenDot offers a reloadable, prepaid credit card with no credit check (www.greendotonline.com). You'll need a credit card in order to rent a car.
  • Step 3:
    Consider using Rent-a-Wreck if style is not an issue with you. You may get a car that literally looks like a wreck. They take wrecked cars and turn them into rentals. Yes, they repair and restore. You're not likely to get a vehicle that is dangerous in any way, but it will likely not be very aesthetically pleasing. Sometimes this will not save you money, but it's considered a great option, because most branches do accept cash instead of a credit card (www.rent-a-wreck.com).
  • Step 4:
    Try going with an environmentally friendly company if you live near major cities. In Los Angeles, there is a company called EV Rentals (see the Resources section). More of the major companies are also adding hybrids every year. This will save you a lot in gas money and give you peace of mind in knowing that you are doing your part to help the environment..
  • Step 5:
    Drive around near major airports. You'll see "cash only" and independent car rental companies that will gladly work with unusual situations. You can get a better deal with less hassle at these car rental companies.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bring documentation of any deal or sale you find online. You will be able to get a much better deal if you have proof that one is being offered. Otherwise, for walk-ins, car rental companies will try to give you a premium rate.
  • Don't take out your frustrations over the company's policies on the agent or associate who is helping you. Their hands are tired by the rules of the company. Take your frustrations to the manager or owner instead of wasting your energy and abusing a hard worker.
