Instructions

  • Step 1:
Start the male footwork for the waltz by stepping forward with your left foot.
  • Step 2:
Step to the side with your right foot so that it is next to your left foot, but about a shoulder's width apart.
  • Step 3:
Slide your left foot over until it is next to your right foot.
  • Step 4:
Move back by stepping straight backward with your right foot.
  • Step 5:
Bring your left foot back, about a shoulder's width from your right foot, and then slide your right foot next to it.
  • Step 6:
Progress forward again by stepping forward with your left foot, and then move your right foot forward and a shoulder's with apart from your left foot.
  • Step 7:
Put your left foot next to it by sliding your left foot.
  • Step 8:
Go up and down with the beats of the music. The traveling steps, or the steps where you progress forward and back, will be on the long beat of the waltz. When you step forward, finish the step by putting your weight on your heel. For the quicker beats, where you step to the side without moving forward, go up on your toes.
  • Step 9:
Remember the beats of the waltz: ONE-two-three, ONE-two-three. The first beats of the music are the ones where the man progresses forward and back while doing the footwork for the waltz.
  • Step 10:
Practice the man's footwork for the waltz slowly at first, until you get the idea of the movements and the timing of the steps. Over time, you can add speed and the music which can further aid in performing the men's foot work when dancing the waltz.
