Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Rock pieces
  • Tumbler
  • Tumbler grit in coarse, medium and fine grades
  • Rock-shaping paper in coarse medium and fine grades
  • Hammer
  • Protective eyewear
  • Step 1:
Break the rocks into quarter-sized pieces with the hammer. Do this on asphalt or concrete while wearing safety goggles.
  • Step 2:
Put 10 stones at a time into the rock tumbler with the coarse rock grit. Let each set of 10 stones tumble for two hours.
  • Step 3:
Remove the stones and grit, wipe off the stones and repeat Step 2 with the medium and fine grit. The coarse grit removes sharp edges and the other two grits smoth the stones.
  • Step 4:
Grip one stone firmly in your hand and rasp the coarse rock-shaping paper against any remaining corners until the stone resembles a sphere. Use the medium paper to smooth away any scratches and the fine paper to polish the stone.
  • Step 5:
Repeat Step 4 until all the stones resemble marbles.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try rolling your marbles during the shaping process. When they roll without wobbling or bouncing, they are ready to use.
