How to Introduce a New Bird to a Flock

Instructions

  • Step 1:
    Do not break the 30-day quarantine. Any time you buy a new bird, you need to do a 30-day quarantine. This may seem like an unneeded step, but it really is something that must be done. You need to keep an eye on the new comer. Make sure the bird is not showing any signs of illness. This also gives you time to get the bird in to the vet for a checkup. This will ensure the bird healthy and cannot give anything to the rest of the flock. Also take this time to bond with the new bird and at very least start its hand training.
  • Step 2:
    Bring the cage into the room, but leave the new bird in there. Do not let the new bird out of the cage for at least a week. Let the birds get acquainted first. Let them squawk at each other. Do not let it out of the cage until you know step-up and other hand-training cues.
  • Step 3:
    Let the new bird out of the cage after about a week. Only let the bird out for a limited period of time, and make sure the new bird is hand-trained.
