How to Get a Job With a Degree in Philosophy

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Start looking early. There's a great deal of competition for jobs that Philosophy majors might take due to the fact that there simply aren't many of those jobs floating around in today's market. So, start sending out resumes and searching well before you even graduate to maximize the chances of finding a good position.
  • Step 2:
Get a temporary position to pay the bills in the short term. While it may not be optimal, it's good to take even a low-paying, part-time job of some kind in the short term while you're looking for a job that fits your philosophy degree background. Doing so will give you a steady income while you continue your job search.
  • Step 3:
Consider a double-major or a minor as part of your degree. If you can, try to flesh-out your potential a little bit by either getting a double-major in some other subject, or by getting a minor in addition to your philosophy degree. This will make you a better fit for more jobs and help you to really become more marketable.
  • Step 4:
Look at graduate school. While a degree in philosophy may not be practical when it comes to getting a job right away, there are many types of graduate schools that look upon philosophy degrees in a positive light. Law school is probably the best example, but there are many other further educational options for philosophy majors that will make jobs much easier to find.
  • Step 5:
Consider teaching. While there's a lot of competition for professor-level philosophy teaching positions, if you are dedicated and really have a passion for it, then pursue such a position. The best way to go about it is to enter graduate school and pursue a masters or doctorate in philosophy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember, keep at it, and don't give up. The only way you'll find a good job with your philosophy degree is by maintaining a good attitude and putting in the hours.
  • Don't expect to find a lucrative position with your philosophy degree, especially right away. It may take years to do so, or it might never happen at all.
