How to Get a Fishing License in Pennsylvania

Monday, July 23, 2007

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Go to your nearest Fish & Boat Commission office in Pennsylvania, County Treasurer Office, or official License Issuing Agents office to obtain your fishing license. Some discount stores such as K-Mart and Wal-Mart carry them as well. You can go to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania website to search for a location by zip code.
  • Step 2:
Purchase a Pennsylvania fishing license on Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission Outdoor Shop. No purchase is required for select "fish for free" days. Typically, two days out of the year, PA allows you to fish without a permit. Check their website for details on the days.
  • Step 3:
Check the price for the fishing license to ensure you have the correct amount. In-resident licenses are cheaper than out-of-state licenses, so if you live in New Jersey and looking to visit Pennsylvania for a fishing trip, verify beforehand the cost. A valid resident id is required to purchase a fishing license.

  • Step 4:
Take advantage discounted fishing licenses available for residents of Pennsylvania who are ages 65 and older or members of the Armed Services Reserve or National Guard.

  • Step 5:
Look into the 1, 3, or 7 day tourist licenses for fishing. You can plan a fishing trip for only a few days and purchase a tourist license when visiting the state from out of town.
  • Step 6:
Plan for trout fishing. If you want to catch trout or salmon, you must purchase a stamp in order to do so.

  • Step 7:
Buy a Lake Erie permit if you plan to fish in any of the Pennsylvania waters of Lake Erie, Presque Isle Bay, and their rivers.
