How to Get a Fishing License in North Carolina

Instructions

  • Step 1:
    Know where you want to fish. North Carolina has a basic fishing license that covers inland fishing. However, additional licenses are required to fish in coastal and boundary waters.
  • Step 2:
    Identify the equipment you will be using. North Carolina has a separate license for people using devices other than fishing rods. If you are using three or fewer devices you will need a non-commercial special fishing device license. If you want to use four or more devices you will have to upgrade to a commercial version of the same license.
  • Step 3:
    Plan for the family. North Carolina allows anyone under the age of 16 to fish for free when accompanied by a licensed adult.
  • Step 4:
    Take your driver's license with you to the local wildlife conservation agent. This will be needed when applying for the license.
  • Step 5:
    Pick your method. Any wildlife commissioning agent can issue a license. Agents are generally located in hunting or marine stores. Large retail stores like Wal-mart and K-mart also have agents available. License applications can be printed out and mailed or purchased online from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. North Carolina also has a toll free number that can be used for purchasing a fishing license.
  • Step 6:
    Decide the amount of time you will be using this license. North Carolina offers a variety of fishing licenses from temporary to lifetime. Temporary licenses are a good investment for non-resident sportsmen on vacation. Annual licenses are the most commonly issued and they can be for residents or non-residents. Lifetime licenses can also be purchased for those who are avid about the sport.

  • People who are determined to be partially or fully disabled by the Social Security Office can receive discounted prices on their fishing license.
  • July 4th is an annual free fishing day in North Carolina. No license required.
