Getting Your Parents to Let You Be an Adult

• Step 1:
  Prove to them how responsible you are. Sometimes parents continue treating you as though you are still a child because you fail to demonstrate that you are a responsible individual. Stop leaning on them to give you financial support or bail you out of difficult situations because it them in the position of having to take care of you
• Step 2:
  Start living independently. This doesn't mean that you have to cut off communicating with your parents, but you do need to learn to establish your own identity, apart from them. If you are still residing in your parents' home, make steps to move out and get your own place, as soon as possible. That way, you have your own territory, where you are free to make your own decisions.
• Step 3:
  Talk to them. It's simply a matter of sitting down with your parents and letting them know that it bothers you when they treat you as though you're still a child. Let them know that you appreciate everything they have taught you, but now it's time for them to trust that you have learned enough from them to stand on your own.
• Step 4:
  Be careful about letting your parents get involved in your personal relationships. When you were a child, they had the right and responsibility to monitor your activities but, now that you are an adult, it is no longer necessary for them to monitor your friendships and relationships.
• Step 5:
  Relocate. If you have parents who have a hard time letting go, it may be necessary to move to another town or even another state. That way, Mom and Dad can't "pop in" whenever they feel like it or be so close that they can continue to control your life.
