Instructions

  • Step 1:
Decide that it is time to get pregnant. If you feel that it is the right time to get pregnant, discuss this with your partner before stopping the Depo-Provera shots.
  • Step 2:
Make an appointment with your doctor to inform him of your decision to stop Depo-Provera and achieve pregnancy.
  • Step 3:
Discontinue the use of Depo-Provera. It may take several months before your cycle returns to normal after stopping the Depo- Provera.
  • Step 4:
Track your ovulation. Ovulation usually returns within three to six months for most women; however it is possible that you may not have your cycle for 12 to 18 months after discontinuing the injections. Ovulation usually occurs around mid-cycle on days 14-16 in a 28 day cycle. Tracking ovulation can be done by the use of home ovulation kits or by tracking your basal body temperature. There will be a slight rise in your temperature for 2 or 3 days following ovulation. This is considered your peak ovulation time and the best time to conceive.
  • Step 5:
Be patient. Pregnancy is possible when you stop using Depo-Provera, but it may be delayed. Usually, you will begin cycling normally 12 months after the last shot of Depo-Provera.
  • Step 6:
Call your OB/GYN if a normal cycle does not occur after 12 months without Depo-Provera. This may indicate the need for further medication or fertility testing and medications. In addition, going without a period for 12 months or longer increases the risk for cervical and uterine cancer.
