Instructions

  • Step 1:
Ensure you are seeking the person behind a specific URL in good faith. The URL owner's details are provided for informational purposes only, and cannot be unlawfully used to solicit or harm him or his website in any way.
  • Step 2:
Obtain the root domain of the URL. This must be the URL of the landing page, not a subsection. Note the extension it ends in (such as .com, .net or .org).
  • Step 3:
Visit WhoIs.net and type in the URL of the person you want to find in the "WHOIS Lookup" field. Choose the suffix that the domain name you are inquiring about uses from the drop-down list. Verify the URL is correct and click "Go!"
  • Step 4:
Scan the results and look at the various information provided. Not only are you given the name of the person that owns the URL, but also their address and phone number. In addition to personal information, you are given the information of the company the URL was obtained through. If the owner purchased a privacy service from the domain registrar, you will either see areas marked "Private," or fields filled with information about the domain company.

Tips & Warnings

  • Domains can be registered under business names in addition to personal names. There is no way of determining the person who registered a URL if they have a privacy service. The name displaying as the person who owns the URL may not be correct. For instance, many webmasters have web designers who register the domain names. This is just one of a number of reasons why this may be.Never use personal information obtained through a "WhoIs" lookup to harass the owner of a website; that is not why this information is made public.Show common courtesy by never sharing a site owner's name, address, or phone number publicly or privately.
