How to Date After a Divorce with Kids

  • Step 1:
Talk with the kids. Dating after a divorce is hard, but most kids will understand your desire to have a relationship. When you sit the kids down and are open and honest with them then they may not like you dating, but they will at least understand your reasons. This will go a long way to helping the kids accept your new dating lifestyle.
  • Step 2:
Be responsible. When you start dating again you may be tempted to stay out really late or even spend the night. However, this is not setting a good example for your kids and it will make you more vulnerable, too. So, date slowly and take one step at a time. This is the healthiest way to begin dating again after a divorce when you have kids.
  • Step 3:
Practice time management. Single parents have to juggle a lot, which makes dating even more difficult. Managing the kids, your work schedule, and everything else is enough to run you ragged. So, finding some free time when you aren't exhausted to enjoy a date is a change. That means you need to manage your time well. Make a list of things that need to be done each day and be sure to complete them so that you can have some free time to enjoy a night out on the town.
  • Step 4:
Have date nights and kid nights. Another great way to begin dating after a divorce with kids is to have special date nights and special kid nights. You want to make everyone feel special, and that is hard to do sometimes. But, if you plan slots of time for all those you love and care about then it will be easier for everyone involved the "share" you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't say your date is better than your children's other parent. Always be respectful of the other parent, even if you don't like them!
