Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Accurate weight
  • Step 1:
Follow manufacturer guidelines regarding weight. While height used to be everything in the skiing world, the performance of modern skis often depends as much on weight as it does on height.
  • Step 2:
Hold the skis up beside you and gauge them against your height. The weight guidelines will only provide you with a range of possible ski lengths. Use the general rule and find skis that fall between your chin and the top of your head.
  • Step 3:
Choose a shorter ski, one that hits close to your chin, if you are a lighter than average weight for your height. A long ski will be harder to control and maneuver. Shorter skis are also advisable for beginning skiers as well as those who like to make quick turns on the slopes. Shorter skis are easier to control, but offer less stability.
  • Step 4:
Choose a longer ski, one that hits close to the top of your head, if you are heavier than average for your height. A longer ski can be more difficult to maneuver, so they are advised for more experienced skiers. Longer skis may be harder to control, but they are more stable, especially in high speed situations.
  • Step 5:
Consider the type of terrain you like to ski. Since shorter skis are better for maneuverability, there are times even a pro may choose to use a shorter ski. Skiing a course with trees or other obstacles is one example.
