How to Choose a Goldfish

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Aquarium
  • Pond
  • Step 1:
Determine how big your tank or pond is. The size of the habitat where your goldfish will be kept will determine how many you can buy. For every inch of goldfish, you need 2 gallons of water. For example, if you buy two goldfish that are approximately 3 inches long, your tank must hold at least 12 gallons.
  • Step 2:
Choose between fancy and common. While there are many varieties of goldfish, they all fall into either fancy or common. Common goldfish will grow up to 12 inches in a pond, while fancy goldfish can grow even larger. It is best not to keep the two varieties in the same tank or pond.
  • Step 3:
Go shopping. Buy your goldfish from an aquarium store rather than a regular pet store. Aquarium stores are less likely to crowd their tanks, resulting in healthier fish. They will also be able to better answer any questions you have about fish or your habitat.
  • Step 4:
Pick out your goldfish. Don't choose fish that look lethargic or dart around frantically. Both can be symptoms of stress or bad conditions. Choose a goldfish that has clean shiny scales and fins.

Tips & Warnings

  • Proper filters and pumps are essential to keeping a goldfish healthy. Ask a clerk at your aquarium store for advice on what to purchase.
  • Never keep your goldfish in a bowl. Not only will it need to be cleaned rather often, it is also not big enough to sustain a goldfish.
