How to Change a Yahoo ID Name for a Chat Room

Things You’ll Need:

  • Yahoo! Messenger
  • Step 1:
    From the main page of Yahoo.com, click on the "More Yahoo! Services" option at the left side of the screen. In the pop-up screen, click on the "Chat" option. The following page will direct you to a place where you can download Yahoo! Messenger. Make sure you download the correct version that is compatible with your operating system, and that you closely follow the appropriate steps for installing the chatting tool.
  • Step 2:
    Wait to be asked to enter your Yahoo! ID and password in order to sign on. You may already have a Yahoo! ID if you have previously signed up for a Yahoo! service. The majority of users typically have a Yahoo! ID from using Yahoo! Mail. You can sign on with the same user ID and password you use for your Yahoo! Mail if you would like. But keep in mind that members of a chat room might have easier access to finding out who you are. The safest and best option is to create an alternative ID name and password.
  • Step 3:
    Instead of signing into Yahoo! Messenger with the user ID you already have, click on the "Create Yahoo! ID" option at the bottom the Yahoo! Messenger page. A new screen should appear that prompts you to create an entirely new user ID. However, this time, only include the minimal information needed to create a user ID. For example, you do not need to include your alternative email. When finished, click on "Create My Account."
  • Step 4:
    Now that you have an alternate Yahoo! ID, only use your newly created user ID for when you enter a chat room. You can still sign onto Yahoo! Messenger using your normal Yahoo! ID to chat with trusted friends. Once you are signed on with your normal Yahoo! ID, you can switch to your alternate user ID before entering chat rooms. The following, final step will help you with this simple process.
  • Step 5:
    Click on "Profile" in the top toolbar, then click on "My Profiles." Now click on "Edit Profiles." You will be taken to your normal Yahoo! profile. Click on "Account Info" in the top, right-hand corner of the page. Click on "Edit/Create Aliases" on the right-hand side of the page. You can now add the new Yahoo! ID you have created. Once this is complete, go back to Yahoo! Messenger and click on "Join a Yahoo! Chat Room" from the "File" option in top toolbar. At the top of the chat-room pop-up, you now have the option to switch your Yahoo! ID before entering a room.
