How to Become an Airline Pilot for Air China

  • Commercial pilot's license
  • Resume
  • Step 1:
    Ensure you have the proper training Air China requires from prospective pilots. All Air China pilots are graduates of internationally qualified flight schools approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (see Resources). You must also graduate with a commercial pilot's license for multiengine and instrument operations. Air China pilots all pass the related Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) flight inspections as well. A degree is not required when applying to most commercial airlines, but a bachelor's degree in a related field gives you a competitive edge.
  • Step 2:
    Design your aviation resume. Describe your entire aviation experience in detail, including any special training, former airline positions, areas of expertise and formal education. The more thorough your resume, the better. Include a cover letter to establish a professional image. Contact Air China employment (see Resources) and follow instructions on where to send your resume.
  • Step 3:
    Expect not to be called to an interview for quite some time. Employment at Air China, or any airline for that matter, is often based on pilot supply and hiring demand. Perseverance is the key to being scheduled for an interview, so prepare to apply on a regular basis. Since Air China has a computerized application-tracking system, begin applying at an early stage right up until you are finally hired. Send in an update once every six months, sooner if there are significant changes in your qualifications. However, it is not recommended that you apply more than three times in a 12-month period.
  • Step 4:
    Get to know Air China before an interview by researching the airline's foundation, policies, procedures and other information that would impress your interviewer. The Air China website (see Resources) is a good place to start for learning some valuable information about the company's background.
