Instructions

  • Step 1:
    Earn a bachelor's degree. There is not a specific major required, but courses in business will be a big help.
  • Step 2:
    Gain at least 24 months' experience in internal auditing. A master's degree can be substituted for one year of experience.
  • Step 3:
    Have your supervisor, manager, educator or other Certified Internal Auditor complete a Character Reference Form attesting to your high moral values and ethical business demeanor.
  • Step 4:
    Apply and register for the CIA exam. Application and registration are available online. The exam is taken by computer and is available at more than 500 locations. During the application process, you must provide proof of your bachelor's degree and internal auditing experience, and the Character Reference Form.
  • Step 5:
    Study for the exam. Links to resources to assist with exam preparation are available at the Institute of Internal Auditors website. After passing the exam, you will will receive your certificate.
  • Step 6:
    Take continuing-education classes. Certified Internal Auditors must complete at least 80 hours of continuing education every two years.
