How to Avoid Cutting Dog's Nails too Short

  • Step 1:
Watch out for the pink part of your dogs nails, also called the quick, as it will bleed if you cut a dogs nails too short. The quick gets longer as the nail grows, so if it's been a couple of months since the last time you have cut your dog's nails, you might find that the quick is longer than you remember. To get the quick shorter, cut your dogs nails each week until they are at an acceptable length.
  • Step 2:
Avoid cutting the quick as much as possible. Some dogs will have white nails that allow you to see the quick. If you cut this area then your dog's nail will start to bleed. If your dog has dark nails, there are a couple of things you can do to try and avoid cutting their nails too short. First, you can shine a flashlight from the bottom of the nail through the claw the see where the quick starts. If you don't have a flashlight, you can very gradually cut your dogs nails starting from the tip.
  • Step 3:
Cut the nail from underneath. If you're using a nail clipper, slide the nail into the opening of the clipper so that it will cut the nails upward. To cut the nail, you need to make a quick and smooth squeeze on the handle while keeping the clipper steady.
  • Step 4:
Hold a piece of tissue paper for a few seconds on the nail if you accidentally cut the quick. There are also products available that you can put on the nail that will stop the bleeding. Even experts will cut a dog's nails too short every now and then.
  • Step 5:
Continue cutting each nail as careful as you were on the first. Cut your dog's nails once a month to keep them at a reasonable and comfortable length.

Tips & Warnings

  • Walking daily on pavement should file your dogs nails naturally, meaning you don't have to cut their nails as often.
