How Does a Person Develop the Fear of Flying?
Tuesday, October 28, 2008
InstructionsPhobias DefinedStep 1: Many people experience different types of phobias. A phobia is an irrational and extreme fear of places, things, or animals. Some people even have social phobias, where they are extremely uncomfortable around people. Fear of flying is a phobia called pterygophobia. In some cases the person may not actually know why they have this fear.
Phobias are very real to the person that is experiencing them. This person that fears flying may not be able to vocalize why they have the fear, or even when it started. Perhaps the fear is coupled with a fear of heights.
Where Does It Come From?Step 1: The fear may be due to the media coverage of airplane disasters. The media gives airplane accidents great coverage, while successful flights go unacknowledged. The person with the phobia encounters more stories about bad flights than good flights, resulting in a distorted perspective about the frequency of plane crashes.
Airplane hijacking could play a roll in a person's fear. Perhaps they fear that the plane might be the next one hijacked, so will avoid putting themself in danger. Perhaps the person that has a fear of flying developed it from a bad experience while flying.
The fear can also be a learned experience. If the person's parents, or family members had a fear of flying and voiced these fears to or around the child, the child may have picked up the fear without even knowing why.
Some people actually developed a fear of flying and have stopped flying after the attacks on the USA on September 11. This fear, along with a bad personal experience, is a tangible fear. These people developed fear from a very real experiences. Others with flying phobias can voice no real reasons for the fear.
Some people have never been to an airport, or near an airplane, yet they have a near terror of flying. These type fears are indeed considered phobia's. These fears may seem totally unfounded to other people, but to the person who experiences the phobia, it is extremely real. The fear may be so great, that the person may have panic attacks at the mere thought of flying in an airplane.
Is There Help?Step 1: Counseling and treatments are available for all of the different types of phobias, but some people just accept phobias, and even fear the treatment itself more than the fear of flying. They learn to accept their fears and adjust their lives to deal with it. They will choose to either drive across country to get to their destinations, or just not go. Flying will never be an option for someone who experiences the extreme fear of doing so. They will avoid it at all costs.
