How Does a Badminton Court Differ From a Tennis Court?
Saturday, December 27, 2008
InstructionsBadminton Vs. TennisStep 1: Badminton and tennis are two popular racket sports, each of which is played at the Olympic games. While the sports share many similarities--both use rackets to hit an object back and forth over a net--they also have many differences. Tennis is played with a ball, whereas badminton is played with a birdie or shuttlecock. Tennis rackets have large heads and handles, while badminton rackets have small heads, strings and spindly handles. Because of the nature of the rackets and the birdie vs. the tennis ball, the courts in each game differ significantly as well.
Badminton CourtsStep 1: Badminton courts have an elevated net that is 5 feet high at the center. The net is similar to a volleyball net, in that it raised with two posts and drapes down, but has space underneath it so players can walk under or the birdie can be tossed under to the other player. The singles court in badminton is 17 feet wide by 44 feet long, while the doubles court is 20 feet wide and a little less than 40 feet long. In badminton, serves are made from a service line 6.5 feet from the net, and can be hit anywhere in the half of the court opposite the side a player is serving from as long as it goes beyond the opposing service line. Badminton courts are generally made up of lines painted on the floors of normal gymnasiums. In comparison with tennis courts, badminton courts are smaller in both width and length and have higher nets.
Tennis CourtsStep 1: Tennis courts are larger than badminton courts given the fact that the ball is supposed to bounce during play, which means it must cover greater distances. A tennis singles court is 27 feet wide by 78 feet long, and the doubles court is 36 feet wide. In contrast to badminton, the tennis court does not reduce its length for doubles play. The net in tennis extends from the ground up to 3 feet at the middle. Because the net is shorter than that of badminton, balls can be hit lower to the ground and still go fairly straight over the net. Tennis courts in the United States are usually hard court, which means the surface is concrete or some other hard aggregate material, although tennis court] surfaces can also be made of grass or clay. Traditionally, badminton has sometimes been played on grass, though today badminton is almost always played in a gym on hardwood floors. Serving in tennis is done from the end of the court, or baseline, and the serve must land in the square diagonal from the server between the net and a service line that is halfway between the net and the baseline. In tennis, the serve must be allowed to bounce once in bounds before it is returned.
