In health classes across the nation, health teachers are addressing the dangers of obesity and the best ways to prevent it. If children are not learning proper eating habits at home it becomes the responsibility of the public school systems to educate children about the dangers of obesity and the best ways to avoid it. In addition to nutrition, children learn about the numerous benefits of maintaining a physically active lifestyle.
DrugsStep 1: Public school health classes in the United States always dedicate time to discuss the dangers of illegal drug use with children. Most health classes will profile the negative effects illegal drugs have on the human body as well as the destructive personal behavior which can result from extended drug use. Periodically, health classes will invite a public speaker to address the class regarding the dangers of illicit drug use. Typically these speakers are former drug abusers or medical professionals who have had close contact with drug abusers.
AlcoholStep 1: Alcoholism is significant to many young children whose lives are affected adversely by an alcoholic parent or guardian. The dangers of over-consumption are usually followed by the myriad of health concerns that can result from years of alcohol abuse. In addition to the lessons on alcohol abuse, it is not uncommon for health classes to examine the advertising strategies of companies that produce and market alcoholic beverages. This examination teaches students how to avoid the temptation presented by clever marketing schemes.
TobaccoStep 1: No health class would be complete without a full examination of the dangers of tobacco consumption. Young children are particularly drawn to the use of tobacco thanks to the prevalent role it plays in television programming as well as movies. Because the allure of tobacco is so strong to young children, a proper education examining the deadly side effects of tobacco use is an extremely important life lesson. It is not uncommon for health classes to show pictures or slide shows of the damage cigarette smoke can do to a person's lungs and heart.

Living a healthy, active lifestyle can improve mental health, help lead to professional success and create a positive family environment. By learning the dangers of drugs and alcohol, children are able to examine the choices other people have made and adjust their lives accordingly.
