Effects of Ecstasy Pills
Tuesday, May 19, 2009
InstructionsImmediate EffectsStep 1: After taking ecstasy, people frequently report feeling energized, confident and highly emotional. Oftentimes people on ecstasy also have a heightened sense of feel leading them to touch everything and everyone in sight. According to the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, while on ecstasy, many people lose all inhibition, become promiscuous, grind their teeth, become nauseous, get blurred vision, and begin to cold sweat. Upon sobering up from an ecstasy trip people will feel a heightened sense of anxiety, depression and sleeplessness.
DeathStep 1: The most serious effect of ecstasy pills is the potential for death. While some people take upwards of a dozen ecstasy pills a day, other people drop dead suddenly after a single dose. This may be in part due to an unknown allergy. However, ecstasy greatly increases heart rate and blood pressure leading to potential heart attack or seizure which can cause death. Additionally, people may die from dehydration while on ecstasy from dancing for prolonged amounts of time without hydration.
Memory LossStep 1: The most well-known long-term effect of ecstasy pills is general memory loss. A study that appeared in the February 11, 2009 edition of "New Scientist" illustrates that those who recently took ecstasy or used ecstasy frequently for more than six months at any point in the past had a much harder time than the control group remembering simple lists and images.
Mental AbilitiesStep 1: The United Kingdom Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs recently funded a study to determine other long-term effects of ecstasy on users. This study showed that those who had taken ecstasy regularly in the past and had since quit experienced troubles focusing, moving quickly between tasks and planning ahead.
DepressionStep 1: A study performed by the Peninsula Medical School shows that people who have used or are currently using ecstasy pills on a regular basis have a slightly higher than average occurrence of depression. However, debate surrounds this issue because it is unknown whether ecstasy causes depression or if people who are depressed are simply more likely to take ecstasy pills. The cited study suggests that it is the former due to the marked depression seen directly after taking ecstasy even in people who are not normally depressed.
