Dental Office Staff Members Permitted to Take X-rays

  • Step 1:
    In addition to the dentist, dental hygienists and certified dental assistants are permitted to take x-rays under the supervision of the treating dentist.

Dental Hygienists

  • Step 1:
    A dental hygienist has a state issued license and renders treatment to patients involving prophylaxis and scaling of teeth in addition to teaching proper oral hygiene techniques.

Dental Assistants

  • Step 1:
    Dental assistants can receive on the job training, take high school or vocational school courses, attend technical institutes or enroll in colleges offering an associates degree in dental assisting. However, only dental assistants who are certified, licensed or registered can take dental x-rays under the supervision of the treating dentist.

Requirements for Dental Hygienists/Radiologists

  • Step 1:
    A dental hygienist is required to have successfully completed a two-year degree program in dental hygiene and to have obtained a state license.

Requirements for Dental Assistants/Radiologists

  • Step 1:
    Dental assistants must complete a certification program that includes courses in radiology (x-rays). Some states require dental assistants to be licensed, registered, to complete a Radiation Health and Safety examination or to pass a state-approved course in radiology.
