Instructions

No Scrolling

  • Step 1:
This annoying act involves one or more members flooding the chat room with incessant, nonsense messages, causing the screen to scroll rapidly so that no other members can successfully chat. When a chat room is moderated, this type of behavior will normally get you booted and, sometimes, permanently banned from the chat.

No Solicitation

  • Step 1:
Unless the chat room you are in is verified as being free of minors, it's best to implement a no-solicitations rule so that any minors in your chat are safe from potential predators. Moderators should encourage all participants to report any private solicitations to a moderator or administrator.

No Spam

  • Step 1:
Using a chat room to advertise other sites, services or products is considered spam unless this activity has been preapproved by a moderator. Spamming activities in a chat room can include asking others to visit their site, take part in polls or join another chat or forum. A warning should be issued to the offending member of the chat. If he continues to spam the chat room, he should be removed from the chat.

No Hate Speech

  • Step 1:
Using hate speech---speech that demeans individuals by race, nationality, gender or sexual orientation---is usually cause for immediate dismissal from the chat room and even permanent banning. Hate speech should not be tolerated in any form to ensure that all guests taking part in the chat are comfortable.

Don't Give Out Personal Information

  • Step 1:
Giving out personal information about yourself and others should be discouraged. Information such as names, addresses and phone numbers should be shared only by people in private messages, if at all. Likewise, anyone soliciting members for their personal information should be promptly removed from the chat room.

Off-Topic Chatter

  • Step 1:
Depending on the nature of the chat room, off-topic chatter might be discouraged and cause for reprimand or removal from the chat room. While some general chat rooms thrive on off-the-cuff chatter, a targeted chat room, such as those whose focus is on a specific subject, can quickly lose its focus if off-topic chatter gets too out of hand. While it's normal to have some off-topic chat, generally this should be kept to a minimum in focused chat rooms.

No Personal Insults

  • Step 1:
Personal insults between members in the chat room should be discouraged and handled accordingly. If a member is beginning to insult another member of the chat, he should be reprimanded and given a warning. If he continues to insult others in the chat, this could be cause for booting him from the chat and permanent banning.

No Profanity or Overtly Sexual Discussions

  • Step 1:
While some chat rooms are more adult in nature, the majority may implement a rule against profanity or sexual discussions, depending on the nature of the chat room. Offending parties should receive a warning after their first offense with the reminder that a second offense could end in their removal from the chat and even being banned.
