Instructions

Anal Glands

  • Step 1:
Dogs and cats both have small glands on either side of the anal opening. When your pet passes feces, these glands secrete a clear or yellow-brownish liquid with a scent unique to the animal.

Impaction

  • Step 1:
Impaction occurs when the anal ducts are clogged and the glands are unable to be expressed.

Symptoms

  • Step 1:
Symptoms of anal gland impaction include sensitivity to being petted, excessive licking of the anal region, dragging its rear across surfaces, "scooting", and problems with defecation.

Treatment

  • Step 1:
Your vet can show you how to express the anal glands at home, but if they are swollen, red, or infected, your vet will have to lance them. If this is a chronic problem, surgical removal of the glands may be advised.

Prevention

  • Step 1:
Feeding a high fiber diet to harden stools will help put natural pressure on the glands in order to express them more regularly and prevent impaction. Check with your vet concerning specific foods and supplements.
