Instructions

Basics

  • Step 1:
Computer networking is connecting two or more computers onto a single network. There are many network topologies, including the Bus Topology, Work Group and Ring Topology.

How it Works

  • Step 1:
A computer is connected to a network device such as a modem, which connects to the network. Once connected to the network, the computer (called a node) has access to the files hosted by other nodes on the same network.

Features

  • Step 1:
There are many ways to connect to a network, including using USB or Ethernet cabling to connect to a modem and/or router. Also available is using a cable or DSL connection and even through cell phone towers.

Considerations

  • Step 1:
When considering the type of network to implement, consider the cost of each implementation. Also consider what the specific needs are for the network.

Types

  • Step 1:
The types of networks vary greatly, but some very common ones are LANs (Local Area Networks), WANs (Wide Area Networks) and WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks). These are implemented by ISPs and other businesses.
