InstructionsFunctionStep 1: Yahoo! Messenger works by users sending instant messages to friends and family that they want to communicate with online. Instant messaging is a much quicker way of communicating than sending emails because the messages appear to the other user immediately after you send it. In order to use Yahoo! Messenger, users must have a computer that meets system requirements and has enough space to download Yahoo! Messenger. System requirements are Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Vista in most cases, depending on whether you're using an older version of Yahoo! Messenger or the latest version.
TypesStep 1: Users can use Yahoo! Messenger from their computers if they have Internet access and have downloaded the free Yahoo! Messenger program. The latest version of Yahoo! Messenger is Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 which includes additional and upgraded features from previous versions. In addition to using Yahoo! Messenger on your computer, you can also communicate on Yahoo! Messenger via your cell phone although some of the extra features such as music and plug-ins may not be available on the mobile version. Internet service is not required to use Yahoo! Messenger from your cell phone but additional messaging charges may apply to your monthly bill depending on the messaging service plan you have with your cell phone company.
FeaturesStep 1: Yahoo! Messenger has many interactive features for users to enjoy. It offers "IMvironments," which are different backgrounds for your instant messaging box, emoticons, audibles, messenger statuses, plug-ins, music, games, photo and file sharing, conference calls via your computer, webcam communication and voice messaging.
ConsiderationsStep 1: Your instant messenger ID will be the same as your Yahoo! email name so people who have your email address will be able to send you instant messages. Depending on your privacy settings, people from other Yahoo! services such as Yahoo! games or Yahoo! groups may be able to see your Yahoo! ID and send you messages. If you do not wish to receive messages from certain individuals, you can hide your online status or add those individuals to your blocked users list. You can only block users who are not on your list of accepted friends.
BenefitsStep 1: Yahoo! Messenger users can also talk to multiple friends at once via the instant messenger. Conversations can be combined in a conference call type of message or users can chat to friends in separate instant messaging boxes. Yahoo! Messenger also alerts users to when a new email has arrived to their Yahoo! mail inbox as well as when friends on their messenger list sign into messenger.
WarningStep 1: Using Yahoo! Messenger for purposes of spamming or harassing other users can result in Yahoo! terminating your entire account. This not only includes your Yahoo! Messenger account, but any Yahoo! account that is associated with your messenger ID such as your email account.
