Treating Acne with Oral Medications

  • Step 1:
Acne is caused when oil and dead skin cells block pores, which causes blemishes to form. There are only a few types of oral medications that doctors usually prescribe for people with moderate to severe acne. These medications are antibiotics, isotretinoin (Accutane), certain oral contraceptives (for mild to moderate acne) and spironolactone.

Treating Acne with Antibiotics

  • Step 1:
Typical antibiotics prescribed for acne include tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline and ethromycin. Antibiotics are effective in treating acne because they destroy the bacteria that cause acne to form in addition to controlling the inflammatory nature of acne.

Treating Acne with Isotretinoin

  • Step 1:
Isotretinoin is an oral medication used only for severe acne sufferers due to the potency and the number of side effects associated with the drug. This is the most effective treatment available because it controls all of the factors that cause acne, including clogged pores, oil production, p. acne and inflammation.

Treating Acne with Oral Contraceptives

  • Step 1:
Women that experience pre-menstrual acne, is usually caused by an excess of the androgen hormone. Therefore, certain oral contraceptives that work as androgen blockers are effective in the treatment of moderate acne by suppressing these hormones, including Yaz, Estrostep and Ortho Tri-Cyclen.

Treating Acne with Spironolactone

  • Step 1:
Spironolactone is often prescribed for women with hormonal acne because of its ability to suppress the hormones that cause acne. It is more effective when used in combination with oral contraceptives.
