They should maintain an awareness of blind spots that drivers of cars and trucks have. They should use the brake light to signal slowing and stopping. Gear is another area of safety. Invest in a good helmet and eye protection. Wear bright clothing. Wear clothing that can protect the body in case of a fall, including leather, long sleeves, pants, boots that cover the ankles and gloves. Finally, riders need to use defensive-driving strategies. They should scan the road for changes in the surface, allow space between themselves and cars, place themselves in the most visible part of the lane, check for vehicles making turns, use signals and refrain from weaving between lanes.
ConsiderationsStep 1: Extra motorcycle safety rules are in order in different situations and conditions. For example, group rides should begin with a meeting to discuss the route, signals, stops and a meeting place. Someone should have a phone and medical kit. There should be a leader and a sweep rider. The best approach is to ride in a staggered line. If someone becomes separated from the group, there should be a designated spot to rejoin the group.
PotentialStep 1: Once a motorcyclist had developed basic mastery of the bike, driving safely becomes a skill that can be constantly refined. Riders can ensure they know their bikes and how to drive them best by undergoing formal training or taking courses geared toward advanced riders. The best way to know a bike is to practice riding it. Riders should put in many hours before driving in heavy traffic, on uneven surfaces or in windy, wet or sandy conditions.
WarningStep 1: There are specific legal and safety considerations for motorcycle riders driving in certain conditions. For example, driving with a passenger on a motorcycle is subject to different state laws regarding footrests on the bike and seating requirements. Riding with a child on the bike is another area that is illegal in some states. Where it is legal, the child must be able to reach the footrests, wear a helmet and other protective clothing, and meet any minimum age or height requirements.
