History

  • Step 1:
Remember all those McDonald's foods that have come and gone along with the promotional items? The McRib, which has not been part of the regular menu in the 21st century, is one of the sandwiches that seems to make an appearance from time to time. Other items that have come and gone include the McDLT, the deep-fried apple pies, various cheeseburgers using Cheese Whiz-like sauce and the 25 cent hamburger promotions. Over the years McDonald's has tried different marketing ideas.

Misconceptions

  • Step 1:
Many people think that the Happy Meal has been around since the McDonald's has been in existence, but that is not true. According to McDonald's web site, the Happy Meal first appeared in 1979. The Happy Meal has seen many changes since then, including the sale of standard Happy Meals in addition to ones for older children. Toys still remain in all of the Happy Meals that are sold after almost 30 years since they first appeared.

Identification

  • Step 1:
McDonald's has one of the most recognizable trademarks in the world, the golden arches. There are many other items that are also symbolic of McDonald's. Ronald McDonald himself is an icon associated with the restaurant. Other characters from the past that represent McDonald's include Grimace, the Hamburgler and Mayor McCheese. On television, some of the most creative commercials in fast food history include the Larry Bird vs. Michael Jordan commercials of the 1980s.

Significance

  • Step 1:
McDonald's is an organization that is well-known for promoting from within and educating their employees. Hamburger University is a real school, and, according to McDonald's web site, has 12 courses that count for college course credits. According to the web site, 70 percent of their managers started out as crew at a McDonald's restaurant. In addition to that, 37 percent of McDonald's franchise owners in the world started off as employees of the chain.

Benefits

  • Step 1:
McDonald's marketing plans have made the chain, and even their fast food competitorsm\, popular throughout the world. McDonald's marketing and public relations have been known to come up with some of the most popular slogans among fast food companies. Some of these include the "You Deserve a Break Today" campaign in 1971 and 1981 and the "Have You Had Your Break Today" campaign in 1995.
