Things You’ll Need:

  • patience
  • honesty
  • Step 1:
Take some time to think. Why do you want an open relationship? There are often social stigma attached to open relationships in mainstream American culture. You may be called upon to explain why you want an open relationship by potential partners. Make sure that you can do this clearly and without hurting anyone. A strong conceptual foundation will go a long way in building strong relationships.
  • Step 2:
Be honest with your partner or partners. If you are a single person that wants an open relationship with a new person that you are dating state this clearly.
  • Step 3:
Listen to your partner(s). Have they ever been in an open relationship before? What are their reasons for wanting one? Did they seem taken aback by your proposal of an open relationship? Open relationships are most harmonious when it is what both parties really want. A potential partner may tell you that they are comfortable with an open relationship, but secretly they may want something more. Create a space in the relationship for dialogue and be cautious about partners that are entering into an open relationship reluctantly, or harboring a hidden hope for monogamy. This will save hurt feelings later.
  • Step 4:
Set the terms of the relationship. There are many different kinds of open relationships. Some set a primary partner, while others treat all partners equally. Discuss with your partner(s) what kind of relationship you want to have and listen while the express their needs and desires.
  • Step 5:
Play by the rules. Trust issues are paramount in any relationship, especially open relationships. Set your terms with your partner(s) and stick to them. If you want to change the terms or deviate from them have a sit down and discuss the changes you feel the relationship needs.
