If you saw a parent/caretaker slap or otherwise physically abuse a child in a public place (i.e. supermarket), what would you do?

    You will do nothing. Chances are you will overreact, as expressed by the way you worded your question. They will be pulled places, etc., and your actions to 'defend' the child will only hurt the child more.
    Unless, of course, the parent is killing the child, in which case call the police. And I do mean 'killing' only.
