"A dented can allows air in which allows the botulism bacteria to grow." As I research this issue on the internet I keep seeing this answer. Problem is, C. botulinum grows in an anaerobic medium (no oxygen) rather than an aerobic medium (with oxygen). That's why poorly prepared home-canned foods are so dangerous. If you don't kill the C. botulinum before you put the food in the bottle, you are setting things up for poisoning your friends and family. Cooking the beJesus out of the food after you open the bottle may kill the bacteria but it does not kill the toxin, which is what kills you!

As for other bacteria; Yes, letting air into the bottle or can can cause those bacteria to grow and poison those who each the food if it's not cooked well enough. But fewer die from being poisoned by Staph. than those who are poisoned by botulism.
