The above answer is an excellent answer so I won't rehash it, but add some additional information. The coloration of the stool, or fecal material, all things being equal is the result of the time its spent in your GI tract tract. When you eat food, its chewed up and forms a liquid/pasty substance. As it moves through the digestive system it is bombarded first by acids, then by bases and finally rests in the lower part of the GI tract, where mucus causes it to solidify and adopt a neutral acidity/base level. This is why the healthy stool is a walnut color. When you have diarhea, the cilia within the intestines moves/spasms causing the chunnel to move through the intestines quickly. The feces can range in color from greyish to a mustard yellow-brown. This indicates a high degree of acidity. If you have a normal bowel movement the stool can range in color from light brown (which indicates you're just getting over some form of intestinal malady) to dark walnut. Green can indicate excess water absorbtion--the opposite of acidity---excess base had bombarded the chunnel...which in and of itself isn't a bad thing....if the stoolis normal.

Black stools, or stools that look like you've passed a hot piece of asphalt are cause for immediate alarm as they indicate bleeding somewhere in teh GI tract.
