The honest answer is simple: land. Most of the Muslim nations see Israel as a cancer that must be cut out of the greater body of the Muslim world. Only two Muslim nations have dared agree to peace with Israel, those being Jordan and Egypt, and by so doing, they have placed themselves in the crosshairs of extremists.

Many Arab leaders have, through the years, dreamed of a Pan Arab empire, stretching from Morocco to Iraq, most notably Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt who actually, for a time, succeeded in uniting Syria with Egypt as the ill-fated United Arab Republic, and recently Saddam Hussein of Iraq. With the establishment of Israel as a separate Jewish nation, the anger and disgust of the surrounding Arab countries erupted into an all-out attack on the tiny country, just hours old. Israel did not invade any of its neighbors, but did fight back the invasion into its territory, and held onto it as a buffer zone.

Israel is a modern, cosmopolitan republic that has two official languages, Hebrew and Arabic, and fully recognizes Islam and permits complete freedom of religion, the same cannot be said of the surrounding Muslim nations. Muslims in the region want Israel gone, and it has been said time and again by the various groups: the PLO, Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Qaida, etc. that they will not stop until every last Jew is marched into the Mediterranean. The Muslims simply do not want a Jewish, more specifically, a non-Muslim, country in their region. The conflict will never end until one side completely destroys the other. Say what you will, but it is undeniable truth.

    • Historically, it's more than justland. Reading the Bible will help explain the problem much better. :0)

    • A modern cosmopolitan country does not consider children and women as legitimate targets, or arrest and charge men of rape when they have consentual sex, or even deny basic foodstuff and medicine.

    • There has recently been discovery of a large gas field near to the coast of Gaza. Since its discovery and a deal that apportions the gas wealth between the Palestinians, Egypt and Israel, Israel has decided to steal it. The war in Gaza and the attack on shipping is to prevent any benefit to Gaza. The next conflict is building up towards Lebanon in order that Israel can steal the Levithan gas field which is off the Lebanonese coast.
