When asking this question you have to be aware that the bible that we read was agreed by the romans, and they included those gospels that seemed to agree most with each other.

Now, when you are looking for quotes that support what you want to prove, you can usually find a reference in the bible anyway, even though there will be other passages that usually support the opposite hypothesis. When you take the Gnostic Gospels and others, such as Thomas' Gospel, into account then you can evidence for whatever findings you want.

The other thing to take into account is that the bible went through centuries of male domination, where references to women in any position of power were removed. Some laymen might dispute this, but it has been admitted by the highest levels of religious authority. This makes it more difficult to show how women should have been represented.

In fact, that is one of my own personal problems with our 'Christian' religion. That those who blindly follow the dogma never question why Mary should be placed so highly while most other female figures are portrayed as whores, harlots, or otherwise weak-willed. We are only now rediscovering that we need our partners on an equal footing, and religion held this down for so long. I feel sorry for God, having to deal with these people to get His message across.

    • If you believe that That was tampered with, what makes you so sure the message of salvation wasn't changed at all? If you're going to change God's word to suit your own cultural preference using that reasoning, you could justify anything- surely that is a road you do not want to follow down, considering your own fallen mind and reasoning.
