Why does it seem that Atheists are expected to back up their beliefs with proof that God doesn't exist? Doesn't it seem more logical that the burden of proof rest with the believers?

Because Atheists are trying to "prove" that God does not exist. Believers, on the other hand "believe", which by definition does not require proof. If some fundamentalist moron tries to assert that their "God" definitely exists, then by all means, they *should* be expected to back up their claim with evidence. By the same token, fundamentalist atheists should also be expected to back up their claim with evidence.

The only rational position to take with regard to the existence or otherwise of "God" (however defined) is agnosticism. Most rational believers are actually positive agnostics who choose, on balance, to have 'faith' in that which cannot be either proven or disproved. By choosing to be a positive agnostic on the limited evidence there is available, they are not obliged to 'prove' anything, as by calling themselves people of 'faith', they are not making any definitive statements of fact.
